Cape Verde: A leader in tourism data accessibility in Africa

Cape Verde has been highlighted in a recent report by the WiTH Africa platform as one of the six African countries with the highest level of accessibility to tourism data on the continent. This recognition, featured on a Portuguese website, comes from a collaboration between the Nova SBE Data Science Knowledge Center and the Nova SBE Westmont Institute of Tourism & Hospitality. The report, titled "Tourism Data Ecosystem in Africa – Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Growth," uses the "Ease of Access Score" system to evaluate the availability and frequency of statistical data publication by national statistics agencies in each African country.

Central African countries like the Central African Republic and Gabon lack tourism data, while the Democratic Republic of the Congo shows good access and recent updates.

3. Importance of Data in Tourism: Sérgio Guerreiro, Adjunct Professor at Nova SBE and founding member of WiTH Africa, emphasized the critical role of data in understanding and developing the tourism sector. He highlighted tourism's potential to drive development in African countries and the urgent need for internal investment to expand data sources and reduce external dependency.
